I was born in Cornwall and have lived here all my life moving to Penwith in 2002.
My interest in photography started about 25 years ago and it has been a big part of my life. I did have a break for a few years during that time due to other commitments and the lack of a dark room but the advent of digital photography and the freedom it affords brought me back to it a few years ago.
Living in the Penwith area the wealth of inspiration that West Cornwall affords has fuelled my work. A visit to a fishing village may produce a ream of images, studying the time worn components vital to a working harbour, baring the scars and character of use.
A walk on the coast may result in compositions to capture the vastness of sea & sky or the towering awe of dramatic and colossal cliffs. Or the very texture and hue of the rocks themselves may inspire intimate abstract images.
The richness of Penwith's wild flowers are a favourite subject of mine as are sunsets which create ever changing vivid and breathtaking canvases across the sky and sea.
I try to look at things differently and like to break the rules with images which is the challenge for me that I really enjoy.
In my work I only use Digital cameras now and I feel that digital has taken photography to a new and exiting level. Offering the photographer a deeper creative involvement with the images they are capturing than ever before.
The creative process does not end with the composing of the image, the selection of camera settings and the final capturing of the image. Photoshop affords the digital photographer further and almost unlimited scope for creativity.
I hope you enjoy browsing my galleries some images are not for sale but are included in the site to show the full extent of my work.
The abstracted nature gallery contains much of my recent work. I am currently working on creating images that utilise out of focus areas with very narrow depth of field. This is achieved with wide aperture lenses.
This produces some wonderfull affects and flowers for example will turn into just patches of colour.
EQUIPMENT
For those of you that are interested I use Nikon equipment I don’t use the high end camera bodies as I don’t give my cameras the sort of heavy use press photographers do. And my cameras are your average Nikons that most people use.
The fact is cameras don’t take pictures photographers do! it’s not the equipment you have its what you do with it that counts. I don’t get too lost in all the technical aspects of photography because I think you can easily loose sight of the point of photography which is the images you produce. I have studied greatly the technical aspects of photography and understand cameras but that’s not my interest they are merely a tool for my art.
I now print all my own work as I have a large format A2+ Epson printer which produces stunning results. This is one area where you do have to have the best equipment as the end result is all important. The prints I supply of my work are of archival quality and will last for 80 years or more under glass.
